GedGap Overview

GedGap is a genealogy tool that can help you plan, rate and prioritize your research plan. Just import your GEDCOM file from your family tree web site or genealogy software and GedGap can:

  • Analyze and score each of your sources to reveal gaps in the reliability of your birth and death entries,
  • Prioritize individual avenues of research based on the quality of the sources upon which they’re based,
  • Determine a confidence rating in your sources based on completeness of research,
  • Provide brief tips on birth and death entries for researching,
  • Allow you to add brief notes to each entries status of research,
  • Allow you to set flags for missing sources being proof of birth and death events, whether research is complete or has ceased, and
  • Produces various reports on your research plan.

The internal scoring engine is customizable for different birth and death source types, e.g. birth index, death certificates, etc.

Please note; GedGap does not currently synchronize data with GedGap2Go.

Read a review of GedGap in the May 2017 issue of "Your Family Tree" magazine or Mac Genealogist on version 2.0-1 (from Chad, November 19, 2017).

Our blog features articles on how to structure a GEDCOM for RootsMagic 7 and Ancestry and a review of using RootsMagic 7 Essentials with GedGap (both free apps) (refer Blog Archives in January 2018).

GedGap Resources

The following resources are available for the current version 2.4 of GedGap, with the Accessible PDF format e-book also available from within the application under the Help > GedGap Help menu;

If you are having any issues (e.g. importing your GEDCOM file) or you have a suggestion, please contact us with your comments.

A previously released demonstration version of GedGap is no longer available for download since it had been modified (and posted to other websites) to remove the 50 record limit. This is unfortunate but to prevent people using a pirated app with unknown and undesirable features that could compromise your system, we have made GedGap available for free on the Mac App Store.

The following resources are available for older versions of GedGap;

Crashing when loading GEDCOM files with Embedded Sources (Versions prior to current)

GedGap does not support embedded sources (citations that do not reference a source record) which are typically created with Ancestry, i.e. creating a citation and not linking it to an existing source nor creating a new source for the citation. GedGap is likely to exit unexpectedly when importing a GEDCOM file containing embedded sources. This issue was addressed in version 2.3. An issue with embedded sources that have no citation detail based on an Ancestry source (source with _APID tag reference only) has been addressed in the current version 2.4.

Names in Plan Window with Blue Highlight color (Version 2.0)

If you are using the blue highlight color in System Preferences > General, when notes are added to people in the Plan window, their name changes to dark blue which can be difficult to read using a blue highlight. This issue has been resolved in version 2.1.

Unable to Read People Legend Issue (Versions prior to 2.0)

If you are using macOS Sierra and you have enlarged your GedGap window, the legend text may have scrolled and be hidden from view. Reducing the window size will assist in viewing the legend text. This issue has been resolved in version 2.0.
